BBB Warns of Online Auto Sales Con

The Better Business Bureau of the Southwest is warning consumers about a fraudulent Web site that took on the identity of a used-car dealership in Deming and lists cars for sale at unbelievably low prices.

The bureau, which represents New Mexico and parts of Colorado, had received about 15 calls about the scam Web site since Thursday.

They are trying to get consumers to wire money to scammers and if somebody does that, they are unlikely to ever see their money or their car; said Jerry Shipman, president of the Better Business Bureau of the Southwest.

Gena Coldwell, executive assistant at the bureau, said she had received a call Monday afternoon from a Connecticut man who wired $2,100 for a car he never received. I think he's just been scammed, she said.

Shipman said the site, www.barrera-autosales.com, looks legitimate, as it uses the name and address of Barrera Auto sales; a BBB accredited business in Deming; and illegally displays a BBB logo that links to a false report about the bogus company.

The bureau is unsure of the location of the company using the domain name, but the registration is out of California which came from another registration in Australia. The bogus company is also using www.barreraautosales.com, which the Denver BBB linked to Malaysia.

The real, family-owned Barrera Auto Sales at 2201 Columbus Road SE in Deming has a perfect record with the bureau and does not have a Web site. Joaquin Barrera Jr., whose parents Joaquin and Rosalva Barrera own the real company, said the business has been getting calls from all over the U.S.

It's surprising, he said. It's wrong. It's trying to scam people.

Barrera said he contacted the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov) and was encouraged by the bureau to try and get the Web sites taken down. As of Monday, one site was still available.

Consumers should double-check contact information and only do business with companies that provide a sure method of contact. Consumers can check the validity of any business at www.bbbsw.org or by calling (505) 346-0110.
