Most people use word of mouth, using recommendations from people that they trust. However, you can do your own research and visit a website such as http://www.unbiased.co.uk to find someone in your area. They only list registered financial advisers and details of their qualifications and the methods of payments for advice are given. See a couple of advisers before making up your mind who you think you can work with as a good adviser can be for life.

There are two different kinds of financial advisers. One kind is fee based and the other kind is usually free to see, but you end up paying them through commissions from the investments.

The up front fee kind is the best, because they are not recieving a commission from any of the financial products they recommend. You are paying for their advice up front. In Australia at least they should be a member of the Financial Planners Association (and have a licence) and to get this they normally do a course that takes two to three years to complete.

If you don't trust their advice, go to another planner and ask their opinion.

Get recommendations from business people you know about who they use as a financial planner. That'd be a good start.

Best wishes
Recommendations from others. Interview the adviser making sure you understand the payment schedule. Judge them by the questions they ask you concerning what you financial goals are, retirement expectations and so on.
Avoid those who are ';tied'; and only sell specific products. Pay only for genuine ';independent'; advice.
